Christopher Christian, PhDClinical Director, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Christopher Christian is a psychologist and psychoanalyst. He is on the faculty of the Psychology Department of the New School for Social Research and Director of the New School Beth Israel Center for Clinical Training and Research. He is a Research Scholar Member of the New York Psychoanalytic Institute. With Michael J. Diamond, he is the co-editor of the recently released book, the Second Century of Psychoanalysis: Evolving Perspectives on Therapeutic Action, published this summer by Karnac. As the Director of the New School Beth Israel Center for Clinical Training and Research, he is responsible for overseeing all clinical contact and supervises both the teaching assistants and research assistants. Anthony DeMaria, MA, PhD CandidateClinical Manager, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Anthony is responsible for overseeing clinical activities conducted by research assistants, psychology externs, psychology interns, and psychiatric residents taking part in an NIMH grant funded study investigating the role of the therapeutic alliance in treatment outcome with Cluster C personality disordered adult outpatients. Clinical activities overseen include structured clinical intakes, adult attachment interviews, patient and therapist relationship interviews (based off of the AAI), and time limited individual cognitive-behavioral, relational/psychodynamic, and integrative treatments. Primary responsibilities as clinical manager include assignment of patients based on their intake evaluations, training and orientation of over 40 research assistants, and maintaining the functionality of the research program's resources. |
Kelly Bolger, MA, PhD CandidateAssistant Clinical Manager, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Kelly performs all interviews for new RAs hoping to enter into the lab and works alongside the Clinical Manager to organize formal orientation for accepted RAs. The assistant clinical manager oversees therapy switch-cases to ensure research protocols are delivered in a timely manner and updates the research project database. Also, Kelly trains RAs how to conduct the patient-therapist relationship interview (PTRI) in addition to monitoring, organizing and assigning PTRIs throughout the duration of therapy. |
Elizabeth Berk, MA, PhD CandidateData Manager, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Liz manages the collection, entry, and storage of all video data and paperwork for 40 active psychotherapy cases and archival data from the past 20 years. Additionally, Liz supervises the Tracking Supervisor, Video Tracking Supervisor, Transcription Supervisor, and all Research Assistants in their handling of the data; compile data sets; and assist with data analysis. |
Laura Kohberger, MA, PhD CandidateVideo Data Manager
In working under a grant funded, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program, the video data that we collect is a pivotal aspect of the research. Responsibilities as video data manager include working in conjunction with the video supervisor and video tracking team to oversee and ensure the quality of videotaped psychotherapy sessions, as well as interviews that are administered as a part of the research program; this would include Cognitive Behavioral and Brief Relational psychotherapy sessions, Structured Clinical Interviews for DSM Disorders (SCID I and II), the Adult Attachment Interviews (AAI) and Patient Therapist Relationship Interviews (PTRI). A key aspect of this position involves providing feedback to new research assistants regarding their performance during the interviews, in order to ensure the consistency and standardization of the interviews that are being conducted. Other responsibilities include guaranteeing that video sessions and interviews are received in a timely manner and handled with utmost care. |

Jessica Harlem-SiegelVideo Tracking Supervisor, Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Jessica works with a team of research assistants to track video data of sessions for each Brief patient. As the recordings are collected from therapists they are checked for audio-visual quality and the set of data for each case is checked for completeness. Monitoring the video data helps ensure that the data can be used for research and supervision. Jessica also works with a team of research assistants monitoring adherence to Adult Attachment Interview protocol. |
Michelle IocolanoSCID Reliability Manager Brief Psychotherapy Research Program
Michelle facilitates the process allowing newly oriented Research Assistants to administer the structured clinical interview to prospective patients. After RA's attend SCID training, Michelle scores the reliability test, which ensures that they are able to accurately diagnose a patient’s target complaints according to the guidelines of the interview. Upon notifying RA’s of their successful completion of the test, Michelle will then notify the Teaching Assistants and they will begin to receive SCID assignments as they become available. |
