Welcome to Dr. Jeremy Safran’s Psychotherapy Research Lab in the Psychology Department at the New School for Social Research. Established at the New School in 1993, Dr. Safran’s Lab (also known as the New School Center for Psychotherapy Research) grew out of the research program that Dr. Safran began in the early 1980’s at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Canada.
Research at the New School Center for Psychotherapy Research focuses on a number of related areas including:
• Resolving therapeutic impasses and alliance ruptures
• Transference and countertransference
• The internal processes of the therapist
• Therapist factors contributing to treatment outcome
• The investigation of skills possessed by expert therapists
• Explicating the tacit knowledge possessed by skilled therapists
• Methods for enhancing therapist training
• The role of therapist internalization in the change process
• Attachment and psychotherapy
• Affect regulation in psychotherapy
